A prerequisite is that the academic institution has at least 100 potential active voters. Eligible voters include all professors and all holders of a doctorate who, on the first day of the election period, are engaged in academic research at the institution.

Furthermore, the applicant institution must:

  • be integrated into the German research system,
  • be a non-profit organisation or publicly funded,
  • allow the free publication of research results.

The DFG will decide on the applications received in autumn 2026.

The application form for setting up an electoral office for research institutions that are not members of the DFG can be found on the DFG’s Research Council Election Portal under the heading ‘Information for Electoral Offices’ (German). Further information on the 2027 Research Council Election can be found on the DFG’s Election Portal.
