In January 2026, the one-hour IHS Compact on the topic of “participatory formats” took place. Prof. Dr. Gesine Bär and Dr. Ina Schaefer from the Alice Salomon University Berlin (ASH) from the IHS project CaT provided an insight into the diversity of participation formats in the IHS projects.

The focus was on the characteristics of participatory formats, the need for flexible process design, and the role of participation as a cross-cutting requirement for transfer and transformation processes.

Against this backdrop, Prof. Dr. Gesine Bär and Dr. Ina Schaefer from ASH Berlin provided an overview of the diverse participation formats in the IHS projects and classified them. The starting point was the observation that the term “participation” is often used inconsistently in the context of the funded projects.

After a thematic input on possible differentiation categories, the 45 participants reflected in small groups on the strengths and challenges of their own participatory formats. The aim of the event was to promote the conscious use of formats in participatory processes and to contribute to a more precise definition of the term “participation”.
