Online Workshop: Institutionalization in Practice Date: , Theme: Workshop

Five years of funding—what happens next? In November 2025, staff from IHS projects of the first and second funding periods met to exchange on the topic “Institutionalization in Practice.”

At the outset, Sandra Behrend presented “Transfer Management between Determination and Flexibilization” at the University of Education Weingarten (PHW), followed by a talk by Dr. Antje Hambitzer on the institutionalization of two transfer hubs at Hochschule Niederrhein (NR). Both universities were funded in the first funding period from 2018 to 2022, with the projects IfB-PHW-Transfer and Leuchtturm_NR.

PHW succeeded, on the basis of IHS funding, in initiating systematic transfer management and building effective transfer structures. The speaker emphasized the importance of understanding transfer management as a balance between structure and flexibility. The Leuchtturm_NR project placed one of its focal points on training staff to become transfer managers, thereby qualifying them for other areas of the university as well. Both universities were able to expand their contacts with non-university partners and continue operating their transfer hubs even after the funding ended.

Following a joint working phase on their own institutionalization goals, Dr. Katharina Krüth and Prof. Dr. Benjamin Nölting from the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE) used their IHS project InNoWest to explore the question: “What remains of Innovative Hochschule after 2027? Think institutionalization from the outset.” The three university partners from northwestern Brandenburg seek to continue collaborating in the future and are already laying the groundwork today. The speakers highlighted that, for successful institutionalization of both transfer structures and inter-university collaboration, taking higher-education policy processes into account is central.

The question of the conditions and possibilities for continuing the employment of project personnel was a central topic of the discussions among the workshop participants.
